You never want to quelch someone's access to getting an opinion out, but I
think the Star Tribune probably shouldn't be publishing letters and opinion
pieces from people running for political office.

When I worked for a newspaper down in Missouri, we had a gentlemen who ran
for school board every single election. When he was not an official
candidate, we'd publish his letters and opinion pieces. However, when
election season kicked into full gear, we made a strict policy of not
publishing any submissions by anyone seeking office (otherwise he'd write
letters everyday).

On these terms, it's equal access (or non-access) for candidates. If this
politician wants to get an opinion out, call up a reporter and voice off.
Take out an ad.

Writing a letter as a concerned citizen is a little different than writing
one as a politician seeking office.

My answer to the Mayor and others who think we have to make massive
subsidies to keep downtown strong...can be found on today's Star Tribune
