Below is a statement from Mayor Sayles Belton about Superintendent Johnson's
decision to stay in Minneapolis. This statement was released to the media
on Tuesday afternoon.

"I am pleased that Carol Johnson has decided to continue her important work
as Superintendent of the Minneapolis Public Schools. Superintendent Johnson
has dedicated nearly 30 years of her career to the children who attend the
Minneapolis Public Schools. During her past four years as superintendent,
she has inspired our entire community to make the education of our children
our first priority.

"In particular, I applaud Carol's efforts to focus on school readiness,
mandatory student attendance, and building strong community schools. We have
made progress together, but there is much work left to do. I fully support
her plan to restructure secondary education to increase graduation rates and
improve student transition to post secondary education. The continuing
leadership of Superintendent Johnson will ensure that the Minneapolis Public
Schools stay on track.

"Strong public schools are critical to the strength of our city. Public
education ensures that all of our children have the opportunity to reach
their potential and become contributing members of our community. As Mayor
of Minneapolis, I pledge my continued support for the Minneapolis Public
Schools and to work with Superintendent Johnson and the Board of Education
on behalf of our city's children."
