Strib's Doug Grow reports the Central Labor Union is making its endorsed
candidates support Mayor Sayles Belton...or else they are stripped of
endorsement. First example: Jim Niland, a labor paragon stripped of
endorsement...but conveniently isn't running for re-election.
No quotes from the mayor, but here are her rivals:
Lisa McDonald on the CLU: ""I was screened [for endorsement] after they
endorsed Sharon. Their whole process was a slap in the face."
RT Rybak: "This specific act by labor is doing a lot to keep other
candidates on the sidelines. But I think, what this really shows is how
lifeless the mayor's campaign is. Sharon and a few labor leaders have a
marriage of convenience, but I don't believe the rank and file is following
along."
Says the CLU's Dick Johnson, ""I have no way of knowing what candidates are
doing in one-on-one situations, and that's not the concern. Where I have a
problem is if a candidate we endorse very visibly makes it their goal to
defeat another of our endorsed candidates."

By the way, an apology: a Sayles Belton supporter emailed me offlist (which
I appreciate) to ask why I hadn't highlighted the mayor's high approval
ratings when forwarding this morning's Strib story. Truth is, I either saw
an early version or missed that very prominent fact completely. But I should
have mentioned it, and apologize for not doing so. I do try to be fair about
passing on tidbits & excerpts in the list manager role. Feel free to email
me at [EMAIL PROTECTED] if you think I've missed something.
