I strongly agree with Mr. Hohmann's comments on a recently proposed
referendum to dictate a property tax increase for citizens of
Minneapolis as a dedicated funding source for NRP. "Premature" and
"irresponsible" is putting it mildly. Working in reaction and under the
gun of looming deadlines reminds me of the recent legislative session,
where more than one bill was passed without adequate reflection and
debate. Mayor Sayles Belton and members of the City Council have
publicly stated their support for the NRP. Give them a chance to lead.
Unilateral action by a single neighborhood group will only harm the
larger goal of ensuring NRP's future through a carefully formulated
citywide policy. The referendum idea is both bad policy and bad
politics. I would urge the Mayor, City Council members, and the NRP
coordinators to call on everyone to calm down and work together in a
manner that suggests professionalism.
