Catchy little title.
I was interested to see what the StarTribune reported
as Commissioner Stenglein's priorities for the city.
Who can argue with a cleaner and safer city.
Indeed it sounds remarkably like numerous past
campaigns which propelled other incompetents into
office.
When in doubt, talk about crime and litter.
This has been a campaign theme since the mid to late
60's.
I'm not sure exactly why this came about. Maybe the
riots in '65 and '68 and the turmoil surrounding the
Vietnam war?
Regardless, it certainly seems to be a recurring theme
of the conservative movement of which I woukd consider
Mark the leading current proponent.
A few questions arise:
1. What would make our city safer?
2. Who is it exactly who does not feel safe?
3. How will we accomplish greater safety?
The idea of crime and safety dovetails nicely with the
litter issue.
As though the current Mayor was not tough enough on
crime unleashing the MPD to stop anyone in certain
neighborhoods who was of a certain color or seemed as
though they may commit a crime, now we have Sheriff
Stenglein and Deputy Summer sweeping the streets of
the litterers.
This is Rudy Giuliani's theory of municipal
government.
Just as smoking pot leads to bacchanialias of heroin
induction so to does littering lead to murder and
arson and burglary.
I guess we can expect Mayor Stenglein to wholly
endorse the past practices of Police Chief Olson and
MPD?
Two images came to mind thinking about Commissioner
Stanglein's comments.
When he said to a reporter he wanted Minneapolis to be
known as "Tidyapolis" I could not help think of Mr.
Tidy Bowl swirling around the toilet.
When he mentioned making Minneapolis safer I wondered
what that would entail. Can we look forward to armored
personnel carriers cruising out streets? How about
Jeeps with 50 caliber machine guns mounted on them?
I don't think I want to live in Mr. Stenglein's
Minneapolis. Sounds scary to me.
