I learned of a obscure but obnoxious car subsidy several years ago, when my wife worked at Century Plaza in downtown Minneapolis. Her company helped both drivers and bus riders. It offered free parking in the building's ramp to the drivers (maybe worth $80 per month then), and offered a discount on bus passes for bus riders (worth what, less than $15 a month?). But talk about adding insult to injury. The bus pass subsidy was, as I recall, W-2'ed as a monetary benefit that the employee would have to include on their federal income taxes! On the other hand, the free parking was not considered income for tax purposes and did not appear on the employee's W-2 form. They give you less, and you have to pay tax on that less!
