Lisa McDonald appeals to many Gay Men in Central -- and many others,
because she has been a lone voice talking about the problems with Developer
Basim Sabri (you know, the person who was going to give Brian Herron a
piece of the action, in return for Brian Herron managing to get the city to
get eminent domain over Corrine Zala's and David Coral's properties.) The
other part of this I find wierd is it assumes that whites are the only
folks who are interested in gentrification. This reminds me of when Wizard
wrote on this list that Rep. Neva Walker shouldn't work on the sodomy law
because she is an African American Woman. Wizard later elaborated that
"white legislators" and "glbt legislators" should be working on this issue.
Now this seems racist to me -- assuming that a legislator should choose
the issues they wish to work on based on their race. It also reminds me of
how women legislators are often expected to work on "women's issues" like
child care, health or education, rather than than get in on the budget or
taxes.

Recall that Wizard Marks was a major booster of Motel Central. She's also
been a major appologist for Basim Sabri. She has called all opposition to
Sabri "racist" which ofcourse gets people up in arms. At times she has
said on this list and on the Central list that opposition to the Motel was
racist. What is interesting about that, is there are many African
Americans in the neighborhood who also opposed the idea for this Motel.

There is definitely a need for Battered Women's shelters -- however,
Hennepin County is the appropriate funding vehicle -- not the city. The
City needs to focus on basic city services: plowing the roads, picking up
garbage, policing, etc.

Yup, there it is again -- Wizard Marks calling someone a racist and mean,
because they don't agree with Wizard. Yup, when you can't win an argument
honestly, just call someone a racist (or a sexist or a homophobe). It
seems like Wizard and the poster "MA" are on the same page with the racial
demogogery. It's kind of like the people at the Lucille's forum who
referred to African Americans who supported Jackie Cherryhomes as "house
negroes".

Are we going to play the Who is more oppressed game again?

<< First, let me reassure Eva that I am quite aware that at
least a handful of upmarket gay men are supporting Lisa. However, the
rest of the GLBTI populace- lesbians, working class gay men, bi's,
intersexed, trans, and "queer straights" are divided between RT and
Sharon. I suspect most of this vote will break for Sharon based on
her several years of support for the GLBTI community. >>

Interesting... I'm not an "upmarket gay man" and I'm a lesbian and I'm
supporting Lisa McDonald. I guess I just don't fit into that box. And I
wonder how Deputy Mayor in St Paul, Susan Kimberly would fit into Dyna's
depiction of the GLBT community.

Regarding Kallenbach and contributions from Basim Sabri -- Sabri had given
Dean Kallenbach some cash -- and Dean was uncomfortable putting it directly
into his campaign account -- so he gave the cash to Rick Stafford, who
deposited in a DFL account. Now why was the money too dirty for Kallenbach
but not the DFL?

Regarding the Wellstone "endorsement" of the Mayor that the SSB supporters
are touting, I'd say David Lillihaug is a good source -- Lillihaug was
supported by Wellstone over DFL endorsed Ember Reichgott in 98 -- Wellstone
hasn't taken a position on this race. It doesn't make any sense for him to
do so -- since he's running for US Senate -- and he can't afford to make
half of the Minneapolis DFL unhappy (since the Minneapolis DFL seems pretty
evenly split between RT supporters -- the Young Turks -- and SSB supporters
-- the establishment DFLers and a smaller number of moderate independent
DFLers who support Lisa McDonald).

Predictions:

SSB and Lisa McDonald for mayor
SSB will pull through in the primary for various reasons. Even though she
is not endorsed, the DFL machine is working on her behalf. Lisa McDonald
will come in second. The fact that all other campaigns -- are now united
in attacking Lisa McDonald suggests that she is the contender in this race.
Rybak will come in a close third -- his strength is his dedicated
volunteers, and Stenglein will come in last in the mid teens.

3rd Ward: Interesting race -- and up in the air. I'd say Shane Price and
Valdis Rosenthal will come through the primary.

5th Ward: Jackie Cherryhomes and Natalie Johnson Lee..... Natalie's Green
Party endorsement will work against her in this heavily mainstream DFL
ward. Natalie has gotten good "earned media" so far. At this point, I
think it unlikely she will be able to topple an incumbent Council
President.

6th Ward: Barb Lickness and Dean Zimmerman
Barb Lickness has a well organized and disciplined campaign, and her
experience and contacts will pull her through. Dean Zimmerman has name
recognition from previous campaigns for Park board. The 53 or so DFLers
who voted for Dean Kallenbach at the endorsing convention will vote for him
again.

8th Ward: Robert Lilligren and Sandra Miller
Robert has built name recognition through an aggressive lawn sign and
advertising in neighborhood press campaign. Aggressive door knocking and
phone campaign will pay off. Sandra Miller has a history of vote getting
from her School Board campaign.

10th Ward: Dan N. and Shirley Carlson
Dan N seems to have the strongest campaign of the DFLers. He, Doug Kress
and Mark Knapp split the liberal vote. Shirley Carlson comes through
second because Republicans tend to vote in primaries.
