Mpls Trivia-
I am very proud to say that William F. Kunze was my great grandfather.
(In fact every time I visit City Hall- which is often- I go to see his
picture on the Wall of Mayors). Mr. Hill is somewhat inaccurate in his
dates. Kunze was originally elected in 1929. At the time, the mayoral
term was for 2 years. He lost his re-election bid in 1931. Mpls papers
reported him as a possible candidate for governor in 1935. History
buffs remember that Floyd B. Olson won.
My great grandparents had been active in the Prospect Park neighborhood
beginning in the early 1900's. In 1960, at the age of 90+, WFK was
elected to the Mpls Library Board. His 1962 obituary in the Mpls paper
(can't remember which one) called him one of Minneapolis' most beloved
elected officials.
After his 1931 defeat, he spent the next 30 years as a leader in the
Mpls business community. A lesson for today? You don't have to be
elected to serve your community.
