Thank you Jordan for this thoughtful, caring and reflective post.
I was amazed and awed at the day of voting. I was an election judge in
the 2nd Ward. We served two percents in Downtown Minneapolis that
personified the fascinating discussion that is occurring in our city
today. One group of citizens live in public housing on the fringe of
Downtown near Eliot Park and the other group lives in the newly
sprouting urban condominiums near the Mill Ruins at the end of the
Stonearch Bridge.
While they did not mirror the rest of the Ward or the City in their
voting habits, they were equally deserving of the type of comments
Jordan makes below about the candidates.
If I had to pick two pivotal races that will decide the future of
Minneapolis politics for years to come, I would say it is the two that
Jordan spends the most time writing about. In one race, in the Second
Ward the tenor and direction of the City Council will tip between the
old school Democrat Farmer Labor thinking of the Naftelin, Fraser, Sabo
wing of the party who grew up at the feet of Hubert Humphrey, Walter
Mondale, Orville Freeman, and -- in some degree --Rudy Perpich and, the
vibrancy of the Principle based Green Party. (I make the distinction
between the StarTribune's characterization of the Green Part as
Environmentally based in today's paper. Had the reporter been following
the party in this or any other forum or he would have known that the he
was just proliferating a stereotype to characterize the party thus.)
The second race, for the soul of Minneapolis, voters will chose between
the DFL endorsed Dean Kallenbach and the Green Party's Dean Zimmerman.
The races in these two wards more than any other, will tell a
fascinating story about Minneapolis' history so hold on to your campaign buttons!
Here's to a great seven weeks of campaigning!
