I understand...my neighborhood has an attack cat! I have two huge standard poodles...but they are not aggressive at all and I don't allow them to be. The older one is actually trained to ignore all other animals including cats and other dogs. The younger one however still has a real "zest" for learning! Well she's learned alright! She's been attacked twice. Two emergency vet trips and almost $300.00!! And this has happened in our backyard! Why can't there be a law...? I have to admit that I worked in City Hall during a "cat leash law" debate. It was wild! ( Second only to pornography! And some of you must remember that one!) Eventually the Council folded. It is sad when these things happen...if this had been a dog the world would have "spun" to handle the situation...however, with cats it is a different tune! Not fair!!! And certainly not safe! (Too bad cats didn't bark...that would do it there would be an ordinance tomorrow!) It seems like a small issue in light of recent days. None-the-less it is a real issue in the "Urban Environment"! -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "Minneapolis Issues" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Cc: [EMAIL PROTECTED] <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Date: Thursday, September 27, 2001 12:10 AM Subject: RE: [Mpls] in defence of??? >Remember: our rules allow pointed disagreement, but require respectful discussion. >-- > >I know I'm going to get a bunch of people's dander up, but here goes... On the side, personally, I like the squirrels. Yeh they piss me off when they dig up my garden, but I kinda see it that we're all in this together and this is their space too. > >It's the CATS I'm concerned about! Now don't get me wrong - I love animals (except maybe the silver fish that seem to always end up in my bathroom). Anyone who knows me with AriCulure and all know me as one of those artist types, but in my past life I was a Zoology major in animal behavior. And I love cats - I have one. > >But it's the outside versus the inside thing. Cats are exotic species and they reck havoc with the environment - including urban environments. And let's be realistic here, it's much more common for cats to be taking down song birds than the local squirrels. Yeh, so my cat is reduced to catching the silver fish and and the like inside the house, but she is happy and much more healthy for it. If the cat must go out - there's always a leash - like the dogs have to. I had a friend back in Michigan who walked her cat and apparently the cat refused to go off the sidewalk! > >And personally I'd rather have the squirrels digging up my garden than having to deal with what my neighbor's cat insists on leaving there. He seems to have decided my gardens are his toilet! Yuck!!! Actually all the neighbors in the area complain about his toiletry habits. Hummmm... maybe I should try recruiting some of those raptors. He's a pretty big cat - maybe I could get them to work togther in teams. > >Liz Greenbaum >Longfellow > > > > > >__________________________________________________________________ >Your favorite stores, helpful shopping tools and great gift ideas.
