I'm glad to see the discussion about the mayor's race has moved to the subject of police. I think Lisa McDonald and Leslie Davis were the best candidates for people who wanted a Mayor who would keep the police in check. As Mayor, neither one would have supported the reappointment of Robert Olson. But today is October 3rd. The Mayor and the challenger have one month remaining to indicate to the voters if they truly care about the City and the people the police in this town are supposed to serve. If the Mayor and he challenger care about the people of Minneapolis, I suggest one or both of them make the effort to meet two of these people, Jeremy and Sandy Meyer in North Minneapolis.
Jeremy is easy to find. He was at Hennepin County Court last week making a first appearance for disorderly conduct charge issued to him after a Minneapolis police officer shot his dog 4 times in front of him August 13. He'll be in court again on October 24 for a pre-trial hearing. The prosecutor at the cattle call September 26 did not have the time to hear any arguments why this charge should be dismissed. Jeremy's mom, Sandy, is also easy to find. She works 3rd shift at a nearby casino. Or she's at home, trying to figure out how her check will cover the $3,000+ in veterinary bills she has acquired as a result of their dog's shooting. When they meet Jeremy and Sandy, they'll likely also meet Charger. Charger is a 1 1/2 year old black Labrador who is living life with three legs now instead of four as a result of the shooting. When he greets them at the door, he'll likely lean against their shin. He'll also accept a dog bone treat from their hand. Maybe in the next month, the Mayor and/or the challenger can attempt to explain to the people of this City why when you call Animal Control to ask about the "dog that was shot in North Minneapolis this month" you'll hear the question, "which one?". I have a vote that (for the next 4 years at least) needs a new candidate. I imagine others do as well. I'm open to anything but promises or gimmicks.
