They did manage to get some good press after in the Mayor's Race across the river, Randy Kelly refused to respond to their questionaire.
I HAVE appreciated how the mainstream press has picked up on the Kelly story. It reminds me of the way Bush during the election said he would "probably not" meet with Log Cabin Republicans because it would be a "huge political nightmare." Ofcourse that statement became a huge political nightmare for Bush -- and the question dogged him for months -- before he finally met with 12 Gay Republican supporters. What is ironic about all this, is Lavender does a VERY poor job of covering political news and has gotten worse with time. What is heartening is the mainstream press in Minnesota is picking up stories that used to be only covered in the gay press. My guess is that some of the reason that the mainstream press has picked up on Where's Kelly in Lavender story for the same reasons it picked up on the comical story about Bush and Log Cabin Republicans. Do Gays in the twin cities metro area even really need a Lavender for political news if the mainstream press covers it. Skyway News advertised the Quorum Forum. Both papers, City Pages, and several TV stations have picked up on the 10 openly gay candidates. List member Frederic Markus's well written letter is in Lavender. That alone makes the magazine worth picking up this time. Sore Losers: Regarding St Martin's post about "sore losers", I think the sign of a successful post-primary campaign is one who is able to rally the party behind him after the primary. With both Dean K's opponents still not endorsing him, he clearly hasn't managed to do that. However, I think it's always important for every candidate to prepare how they are going to behave should they lose an election. The best way to do this is to call your opponent once it is clear that you have lost and offer congratulations. Then you give a gracious concession speech. On the Clean vs Dirty Dean Campaigns.... Does anyone know how much Kallenbach spent per vote? What about Zimmerman? Jordan Kushner writes: Rick Stafford has made himself very prominent in the campaign by making public attacks on opponents and apparently orchestrating all sorts of manipulative and questionable tactics to secure the DFL nomination for his candidate. This supports the perception that Kallenbach is a tool of the DFL machine, rather than his own candidate. On the other hand, Jenny, Dean Z's campaign manager, has limited her public involvement to positive statements and defenses of her candidate. ============================================ EY: In a well run campaign, the candidate -- and not the campaign manager are more prominent. Both the Kallenbach campaign and the Brock campaign have had campaign managers stand in for the candidate at forums. The more I think about it the comparison between Kallenbach and Nixon is pretty poor. I think a better comparison would be between the Kallenbach campaign and the Bush campaign. Strategist Karl Rove is known as "Bush's brain." He is also known for underhanded tactics. On the Term Limits Discussion: On that topic, I agree with Connie that the voters are the best way to term limit people. That being said, a truly successful politician will mentor and help others learn the tricks of the trade. Once Natalie Johnson Lee decided to run as a Green -- rather than a DFL alternative, that gave the Mayor a perfect opportunity to have an excuse for not helping Natalie learn the ropes. However, before that, Johnson Lee is the type of person one would think the Mayor would be trying to encourage to succeed in the political arena.
