Those writers to the list who have been proclaiming the value of phonics are preaching to the choir when they are speaking to me. I used phonics at home with both of my kids when they were learning to read, back in the days when Minneapolis Public schools did not have a standard reading curriculum. My understanding is that the Houghton Mifflin series, which was just introduced in Minneapolis Public Schools 3 years ago, does have a phonics component, and that HM has expanded that component in response to school districts' requests. I would be curious to know from folks who currently have kindergarten or first grade students in the MPS what their children's experiences have been in their classrooms as they are learning to read.
