Eva Young writes:-"What I'm curious about is how much help the Green Party gave Natalie Johnson Lee in the 5th ward. It seems like what she could have used the most is help with paring down and using the SOS 5th ward voter list. It's also a really good question whether the Green Party endorsement helped -- or hurt Johnson Lee in the 5th ward. When I checked the Lavender Greens website: http://www.lavendergreens.org, City Council Candidates Gordon and Zimmerman filled out the questionaire. Johnson Lee and Shane Price didnot."
Concerning the Lavender Green endorsement Johnson Lee and Shane Price both answered the 8 yes/no questions on our questionaire during their Green Party endorsement process and over the phone previous to the primary. We requested that our candidates also answer our three essay questions to have their questionaire posted to our website. Natalie Johnson Lee and Shane Price have both been very supportive of Lavender Greens issues. Natalie and Shane both marched in the GLBT Pride Parade this summer. Natalie also attended National Coming Out Day(even though she had fly out of town later that day for a family funeral). Natalie has been very busy campaigning while dealing with the loss of three family members during the campaign whose funerals she attended. She just missed the deadline to get her questionaire posted with all the trips she has had to make out of town for these unexpected family events. Brother Shane recently started a new job which limited his ability to get of work for some campaign events. This is why he missed the NCOD Luncheon(though he sent his regards). His email was down for awhile and Lav Greens questionaire was set to the candidates via email. He also missed the deadline to get his questionaire posted to the website. Both of these candidates affirmed the national and local platform positions on GLBT issues which in part state "We support the rights of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered people in housing, jobs, civil marriage and benefits, child custody and in all areas of life to be treated equally with all other people." Natalie Johnson Lee was asked from the floor about gender identity related health care benefits for public employees at her endorsing convention. She answered in the affirmative. The essay questions they did not get answered asked: 1.what they saw as the primary issues of people of color and how they would help our community see color and celebrate it. 2. gender diveristy & 3. class consiousness. Lavender Greens screening committee decided that the three essay questions had been sufficiently answered by these two candidates in a variety of settings and chose to include their names on our materials with the exceptional circumstances both these candidates had faced outside their campaigns as a factor.
