I don't like whisper campaigns, either. But I think for Jackie Cherryhomes to bring
that up now does more harm than good.

Clarence Hightower remarked in Doug Grow's column about what to say to young
African-Americans about Sharon's defeat. I am concerned that young people are being
taught that democracy is a zero-sum game, in which a defeat for the mayor is a defeat
for them! "We tell them, 'stay in school, work hard,' and for what?" he asked. I say,
"Work hard so that YOU can someday run for mayor, for city council, for governor, for
president." Honestly, need one ask why to encourage young people to suceed?

Both Cherryhomes and Sayles Belton are talented women who can go on to other, greater
achievements. But it is their choice to display honest insights into themselves.
Frankly, I credit both with more sense than to continue a difficult and often bitter
fight.

I was often bitter too, and no longer wish to be. I am determined to see Minneapolis
meet the challenges ahead.

Jackie and Joan and Sharon no longer sit in office, but they are still our leaders in
showing young people how a public servant gracefully leaves office without it turning
into a demonstration of anger and despair. I am sure that anger and despair is not the
message they wish to send.
