Brett Stephan asked for a List Manager opinion, so here it is:

Here's a crucial concept for list members to remember: please don't try to
shut another list member down (Brett's last comment).

If you don't like a thread, there are two things you can do: respond to it
critically, or hit the delete key.

But asking people not to comment in the future is, I believe, inappropriate.
It may not be an issue you care to discuss or read about, but it is not a
member's place to impose their topic tastes on the full list.

Now, we do have rules about inappropriate list behavior - things that aren't
Minneapolis-specific, or involve insult, name-calling, serious charges
unsupported by an argument, etc. If you think a thread has run afoul of
those things, our list rules ask you to email me - as list manager, it's my
job to make a ruling. If the complaint is valid, I will try to stop the
thread.

Hwoever, Brett's objection to the thread is, as he allows, a matter of
taste. If you believe there are more important issues, please, say so on the
list. If you believe corporate/commercial topics are a waste of time, please
hit the delete key (or email the poster offlist and make your case for
ending the thread).

But please don't tell everyone else not to darken your inbox with a topic
that is not rule-breaking...that's going too far.

Over the years, members have complained that Minneapolis-Issues isn't always
the most welcoming place to post their thoughts - that it can be
unnecessarily intimidating. That's one of the biggest reasons I'm adamant
that members should not ask other members to terminate threads...people need
to be free to discuss anything Minneapolis-specific THEY think is
important...generally, the dopey stuff dies of its own weight.

I do appreciate Brett asking, so new members can better understand list
culture.

Best,
David Brauer
List manager
