We need to be able to find out who is giving money to candidates.
According to the people who keep the financial disclosure documents about candidates fundraising at the Henn. County govt. center, they are currently prevented by Minnesota statute 383b.041, to publicly list the campaign disclosure documents on line.
Can someone tell me why?
Basically this means that for most of the city elections the actual information of where the money is coming from will never be seen. There will be some reporting of the more prominent races, but the majority will be for on premise observation only.
Because I ran (and lost) I was curious about my opponent's fundraising. What I found was that 18 of 20 listed contributions (those more than $100) were from political action committees.
But the purpose of this post is not to address my campaign but to try to get someone to figure out how to get the actual information available.
This would seem to be a very important part of an election toolkit. How can we get our legislators to permit online or phone access of this important information?
Is there a list member (or large metropolitan newspaper) who could assemble the candidate info from the elections dept.?
