It might behoove those concerned about AG Ashcroft's request to remember that the Mpls and St.Paul Police are not the only game in town.
I listened to Tom Heffelfinger on the radio Friday and I think I recall him mentioning the Hennepin County Sheriff as well. I don't buy for one minute the idea that if a person does not comply with a request to be interviewed he or she will be left alone. These guys already have hundreds of people in jail who have been denied due process. Do you think they'll stop if Mr. XYZ says NO? We are on a mighty slippery slope already and it feels like were picking up steam rather than slowing down. It would be helpful if a politician would open their mouth and weigh in on this issue. The Mayor's prime responsibility in this town is to oversee the police chief. What does either the current or future Mayor think of this? I don't think it is too much to expect either to speak to this issue. We need to take this issue and whole homeland security back into the political realm. As it is, it has fallen into the realm of the military and the police and I am not comfortable with the direction this is taking. We have a longstanding tradition of civilian oversight of both military and police and it is being eroded in the name of national security.
