There are two upcoming meetings on pollution permits for Minneapolis
facilities: Xcel Riverside coal plant and Owens-Corning roofing facility.
More and more citizens are questioning the automatic renewal of pollution
permits, and many organizations and individuals are requesting public
meetings to ask for better pollution controls. Please attend these meetings
if you can:

Owens-Corning Pollution Permit Public Meeting
Wednesday, November 28, 7 p.m., Creekview Center, 5001 Irving Ave North (one
block off the Humboldt Greenway)
(The O-C facility is located in the Humboldt Industrial Area on 49th Ave
North in the Camden area)

O-C is a roofing and asphalt manufacturing facility and emits several tons
of pollutants each year, including 198 tons/year of PM10 (particulate
matter, or soot) and 209 tons/year of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs).

Xcel Riverside Coal Plant Pollution Permit Public Meeting
Thursday, November 29, 7 p.m., Gustavus Adolphus Lutheran Church, 1509 -
27th Ave NE (from south Minneapolis, exit 35W north at Johnson St; follow
Johnson to 27th Avenue, turn left one block to Lincoln St.)

Xcel Riverside is the largest source of air emissions in Hennepin County. It
is located on the Mississippi River and directly across the street from
residences. Its boilers were brought on-line in the 1950s. Citizens and
community groups are asking that in the short term, Xcel convert to natural
gas.

In 1997, the Xcel Riverside plant emitted these and other air pollutants:
8,538 tons of sulfur dioxide (SO2), 10,065 tons of nitrogen oxides (NOX),
104 pounds of mercury and 280 tons of particulate matter (PM).

For more information on Xcel Riverside, connect to the South East Como
Improvement Association (SECIA) web site at www.secomo.org and check out
the section on Riverside.
