The Minneapolis Senior Citizen Advisory Committee and the Minneapolis
Advisory Committee on People with Disabilities are both currently accepting
applications (in fact the deadlines for each of these as been extended).
Below are details on each of the committees and how to submit an
application.  Applications are also available online at:

SENIOR CITIZEN ADVISORY COMMITTEE TO THE MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL  Purpose: To
inform itself about community issues that affect senior citizens; act in the
interests of senior citizens generally and avoid acting in the interests of
particular groups or individuals; identify and explore common issues with
suburban service providers and elected officials; network with and educate
elected officials on the importance of selected policy issues relating to
senior citizens using national, state and local research to build a vision
of the future for seniors; recommend policy issues to the Senior
Coordinating Board to address; serve as a resource to the Senior
Coordinating Bd and its staff, and in turn use the Senior Coordinating Board
and its staff as a resource for the work of the Senior Citizen Advisory
Committee.

Membership: The committee has 23 members appointed jointly by the City
Council President and Mayor. Thirteen are qualified seniors, one from each
City ward; and ten are representatives from qualified organizations that
fund or provide key services to seniors. Minneapolis residents 55 years of
age or older are eligible to apply. 

Application Procedure: Application forms are available from the office of
the City Clerk, Room 304 City Hall, 350 Fifth Street South, Minneapolis, MN
55415-1382, (673-3358). Hearing impaired persons may call TDD 673-2626
between 9:00 AM and 4:30 PM, Monday through Friday, or Minnesota Relay
Service at 1-800-627-3529 to reach any of the numbers listed here. Completed
applications are returned to the City Clerk and then forwarded to Ruth
Kildow, Senior Citizen Ombudsman. The Mayor and City Council President
jointly nominate members to the Council. Recommendations are forwarded to
the Ways & Means/Budget Committee for consideration and then to the full
Council for final confirmation. Incumbent members are invited to apply for
reappointment.

Information: Time and location of meetings are the second Thursday of each
month, 1:00 to 2:30, in Room 333 City Hall. For more information about the
activities of the Senior Citizen Advisory Committee to the Mayor and City
Council, call Ruth Kildow, 673-3004. Information on application procedures
is available by calling the Office of the City Clerk at 673-3358.

Vacancies: Applications are being accepted for 17 positions.  Representation
is required from each ward.  Due to under representation, senior residents
from wards 3,4, 6 and 10 are encouraged to apply. Persons may apply on their
own behalf or nominate another person. Applications must be received no
later than 4:30 p.m. on Friday, January 25, 2002, (extended from December
28, 200). 


   Minneapolis Advisory Committee on People With Disabilities   

Purpose:  To expand opportunities for all children and adults with
disabilities throughout Minneapolis, without regard to disability or other
protected class status.  Additionally, we advocate for policies and programs
that promote the independence of persons with disabilities and protect their
right to fully participate in society.

Membership:  The committee has 15 members appointed by the Mayor with
confirmation by the City Council.  Applicants must be knowledgeable or have
expertise in one of the following areas: accessible housing, transportation,
employment, or programmatical and architectural accessibility.  Applicants
should recognize that people with disabilities have unique concerns
regarding their daily activities.  Members serve two-year terms which are
staggered so that half of the members are appointed every year.  Four
unexcused absences during a calendar year will be cause for dismissal.
Members receive no compensation.  There are no restrictions on
reappointment.

4:30 to 6:30 p.m., in City Hall.  The meeting room is accessible to persons
with physical disabilities.  For more information about the activities of
the Minneapolis Advisory Committee on People with Disabilities, call Margo
Imdieke Cross at 297-2920.

Vacancies:  Persons may apply on their own behalf or nominate another
person.  Applications must be received no later than 4:30 PM on Friday
January 25, 2002, (extended from December 28, 2001).
