Folks, as a very successful list year comes to an end, I would like to
remind members of our purpose: to engage in respectful discourse about
city civic affairs, even though we may disagree fundamentally.

A few people in the last few days have crossed the line - into
one-on-one food fights or disrespectful mockery. Warnings have been
given for the first time in many weeks, and will continue in the new
year if needed. Principled disagreement is fine, but the extra
belittling or personal spite is not. This sort of spitefulness is the
number one reason people leave the list - and our goal is to get
everyone who cares about the city here.

This is NOT a lowest-common-denominator standard - we are not seeking to
dumb down the list, and I think we are in no danger of being a tea
party.

I ask everyone to focus on the issues, and work hard to leave out the
personal or the mean. We need tough questioning of public
decision-making. However, we also need to remember that we are part of a
constructive community and treat everyone, whether we agree or not, as
someone we will have to work with, not demean.

Sincerely,
David Brauer
List manager
