I'd like to second Lynnell Mickelsen's ode to clear-ice lake skating. An old-timer
told my son that this is only the fourth time he could remember ice without snow in
nearly 50 years of living near Lake Harriet. I remember the last time about 10-12
years ago, but as I recall the ice was snowed in by Christmas that year. As we
circumnavigated Harriet this morning at daybreak, it was the perfect answer to the
question I'd been posing to myself recently in the adjustment to turning 50: Do you
start focusing only on all the negatives of winter at a certain age and forget the
things you used to enjoy?
There's no heavy snow in the forecast through Sunday, so conditions should stay good.
Is the ice safe? There was absolutely none of the cracking and rumbling we got when
skated around the last time this happened. Ice anglers have been on the lake for a
week. If you want a spectacular experience, wait for the moon to rise at 10:01 p.m.
It helps you spot the ice fishing holes, but they're mostly clumped near the bandstand
and the north beach. A question for the Park Board: Why isn't the bandshell's warming
house open yet for this beautiful skating?

Sleeps in Kingfield but liable to pop up in a neighborhood near you.
