My best wishes to the mayor, council, city manager or
comptroller. I think they will quickly discover, if they
haven't already, that they will play out decisions made by
the previous councils (probably back to the original council
in 18 hundred something). They'll make decisions that will
turn out to be an embarrassment and some that will turn out
to have been a stroke of genious. They'll wind up forming
into the conservative and the liberal--or they'll be named
that anyway and we'll turn them into bad guys as time wears
on. We'll get disappointed in the way they vote on this and
that or their overall voting record.
I am very sorry that Natalie Johnson Lee is the only African
American on the council. Having watched both Sharon and
Brian be the sole AA, I've seen that their jobs were not
just the Eighth Ward, but all the people of color who came
to them to get heard. It is a fact that people of color do
not often feel that they will be heard by whites, nor do
women often feel that they are heard by males.
(SSB could hear women, hence Harriet Tubman Shelter, Ferris
Alexander off Lake Street. Lisa McDonald could not, hence
her unsuccessful attempts to cut Tubman out of the budget.)
It's very weird not being able to call Vernon Wetternach,
I'll miss that.
