Well, I can't speak for who was getting along with who regarding City
Council members because everyone there was schmoozing it up with whomever,
so very hard to tell what kind of politics were going on - generally
speaking it seemed everyone was having a grand time and being whatever.
The winner of the craziness was obviously Miss Richfield. I wasn't in the
show but ask people that were about the upside down splits and dancing feet
- I was in the restroom and heard the uproarious laughter and yucking it up
- people say it was wild.
The dance band left a lot to be desired but never-the-less lots of people
danced throughout the night. RT is very swift on his feet - did lots of
dancing with his daughter, a dear friend and he and Megan "cut it up" a
couple of times. He was definitely in rare form and all over the place
having a blast!
Natalie J-L silver shimmery dress was a sight to behold and can she
dance??? Of course, Zimmermann's North Dakota dance style takes the
cake. David Fey's partner is either very tall or David is very short -
actually I believe they are a combination of both. Andrea Jenkins -
Lilligren's aide can sure cut a step or two herself. Saw Lisa Goodman's new
boyfriend across the way but didn't see them have a dance.
And Tony and Erica Bouza and Joe and Rose Selvaggio get the award for
dancing almost every single dance - the four of them looked like they were
having a very good time.
And there was one couple there whom I have no idea who they were but had
obviously spent some time at Arthur Murray and could really, really dance -
they were beautiful to watch.
In relationship to others it is my understanding there was never another
inaugural ball until Sharon's 8 years ago which there will never be a
comparison too - after all Jesse Jackson in the audience would lighten
anything up and the music that night was unbelievable and people were
dressed to the nine's that night in full regalia with lots of diversity
from all over the city. And the first woman black mayor in the country did
have very meaningful significance and the minority community came out and
was very proud of that fact.
This one was very different and although I think about the same size
audience this year's was more spread out with the lobby for chatting and
two places to go see or dance to music. So you never really saw everyone
all together and so everyone missed somebody. It is my understanding Don
Fraser did not have an inaugural event and I believe it was Art Naftalin
before him and I was told he held a community pancake breakfast for his
event. (I don't know if that is true - before my time?)
So there is not really much history on iinaugural balls to take any
significant memories from. Wonder if there were earlier in the city's history.
One of the things I felt was so different was the age difference of the
audience and the missing DFL "hacks", while this time around there were
lots of new faces, new blood and people who want to see change.
On the Sharon attendance thing - I can't say she should have been at the
ball but I do think she should have been with all the other former Mayor's
and elected officeholders in the balcony at the Swearing In. We all know
she is probably still hurting a lot from her past year but if Al could do
it so should she have been able to.
And as far as the dressing to impress - well, nothing will ever compare to
the glitter and color of 1994. This year was lots and lots of black. And
one last mention - Sheila Delaney and Liz Nerud (Jim Niland's wife) could
have a had a contest about the depth and breadth of the bodices of their
evening gowns. And Jewlean Jackson in her Red pantsuit would be on the top
ten list as would the Eros-Phillips duo in their African attire for best
dressed.
It was as usual a fun time and a way to see who's who, today. I am sure
there is much hotter gossip and tidbits than I am sharing so a few more
reports would be appropriate.

My three cent review of Saturday night.
Annie Young
East Phillips
And one of only three Park Commissioners in attendance (unless John Erwin
was hiding somewhere that I didn't see him)
