I would agree with Steve Cross ("Respectful
discourse in 2002", 12/31/01, Mpls digest,
Vol 1 #605 -- 7th message) that progressive,
intermediate, temporary banishment would be
a more effective deterrent to disrespectful
behavior than our present policy. However, I
would not want the mitigation of deterrence to
encourage a drastic increase in leniency.
Also, I believe that the Mpls. Lists policy of
allowing contributors to not adequately
identify themselves is an encouragement for
making personal attacks because those who
do not completely disclose their identities
might tend to be less responsible for the
content of their contributions.
The Star Tribune, the Pioneer Press, and City
Pages do not allow their editorial contributors
to partially identify themselves and we should
not do so either
All contributors should be required to indicate
their full first and last names. First initials and
nicknames should not suffice. If our rules are
not formally changed and enforced in this
regard, I would encourage members to totally
ignore any contributions that are provided by
anyone using an initial instead of a first name
or by any "Butch" or "Dolly" types.
