Re: the current park board thread. Members are reminded that our rules require discussions be of a "substantive and respectful nature." We don't have any problems with substance on the thread, but I do sense degrading respect.
I ask that all the combatants take a step back, resist using words like "hate mail" and "slanderous." We often disagree - this is the place for that - but here we have to do so respectfully. In conflict-ridden threads such as these, resist extreme characterizations and labels - if you have the facts on your side, the strength of your argument should be enough. Also, a reminder about list rule, #5, that states "One-on-one arguments, disagreements, and disputes of a personal nature must be taken off list." Asking about a specific member's paycheck is a bit too close to a personal attack, the sort of intimidation that keeps people from participating Generally, I ask that members try to address their issue-based remarks to the forum, not to each other...that helps reduce nasty personalization and avoid one-on-one disputes. If you want to invite each other to coffee, facetiously or not, or check each others' pay stubs, please have that conversation off-list. Finally, I encourage all members to take a spin through the rules if they haven't done so recently: they're at http://www.e-democracy.org/mpls.
