Originally occupied in 1902, the Council
Chambers have seen two extensive previous renovations in 1923 and 1956.
Today, the restoration has not only replicated the 1923 beauty and design,
but it has added state-of-the-art audio-visual equipment and the required
heating, ventilation, air-conditioning and life safety upgrades that
originally prompted this project.
Meticulous efforts went into the replication
of plaster wall panels, pendant light fixtures and the recreation of two
7-by-10 foot reproductions of John Bradstreet's murals that once adorned the
walls of the Chambers. The City Council approved the historic restoration of
the chambers after original plaster designs were uncovered behind false
ceilings, which were put in place during the 1956 remodeling and from
photographs from the archives of the Municipal Building Commission.
A number of photographs* of the chambers are
available on the City's Web page,
