I saw a TV show recently on intelligent species on TLC I think, and 
crows were known to have behavior of being aware that one of their own 
is dead.  (At least I think it was crows that had that behavior)  Many 
sites cite that crows have a very tight family unit and know how to use 
sticks as tools.  The awareness of a death in a family is probally part 
of the identifcation that they have a family unit.
