My opinion about this design (admittedly based on just a hasty viewing of it) is that it's just more of the same -- it has the same problems as the old Guthrie (MTC) building -- pretty outside but not very functional inside. This looks just like that -- vast overspending on the exterior design; paid for by underspending on the actual working parts of this as a theatre building.
The current building had similar problems. Too much was spent on a pretty exterior, which turned out to be extremely expensive to maintain (eventually, it became so unmaintainable that it was torn down). And the budget was balanced by spending way too little on the shops, rehearsal spaces, etc. where the real work of the theatre was done. They limped along in these cramped, compromised spaces for years until the addition was built, bringing the work spaces to where they should have been in the first place. Now the new Guthrie design is repeating the same mistake! Why do architects do this? They seem to constantly create a flashy, expensive exterior, while making cheap compromises on the interior working spaces of their buildings. Building monuments to their own ego, with little understanding or concern for the actual work that will go on in the building.
