I just learned of Richard's passing when I got my issues digest a little
while ago. With Greg and Brian, I am surprised and saddened.

I first met Richard when I ran for State Rep in 59B, and though I don't
think we were ever on the same side in a campaign (he even managed one
of my 1998 Secretary of State opponent's campaign for a while), I always
enjoyed bumping into him and sharing political and personal gossip. He
was great to be around, and he always brought a smile to my face.

Nowadays I'd usually see him at the drug store group, and saw him there
just a couple of Thursday's ago, and had a nice conversation.

I called Tom at the drug store and found that he had heard the news
yesterday. Apparently it was a quick series of heart pains and attacks,
which at first were though to be flu symtomns. Richard was able to get
to the hospital and they were working on him, but they could not save
him.

Tom put it well--"Richard worked on lots of campaigns, but he never had
anything bad to say about anyone." (I know they won't be able to say
that about some of us.) Tom also told me something I had never heard.
According to Tom's recollection, Richard's father, Arnold Marshall(?)
Rose (who died before reaching 50), worked with Gunnar Myrdal on the
classic and very important book "An American Dilemma: The Negro Problem
and Modern Democracy." He was at the U, and served in the State
Legislature. How I would have liked to have asked Richard about that.

Richard was a wonderful, warm and friendly person, and I miss him in my
world already.
