Concerned about Camp Coldwater Springs and the underground water in the area, I recently placed the following resolution before the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board, where it passed unanimously at the meeting on February 20, 2002:
Whereas, Camp Coldwater Springs is a cultural, historical and environmental asset worthy of preservation for the residents of the State of Minnesota; and Whereas, Camp Coldwater Springs is a site sacred to many Native Americans and figures prominently in European American and African American history in Minnesota; and Whereas, Camp Coldwater Springs is impacted by the health of the area's ground water resources; and Whereas, construction projects in the area of Camp Coldwater Springs may impact ground water flows; and Whereas, healthy ground water resources are vital for maintaining water quality in the Chain of Lakes; and Whereas, Minnehaha Park may lose a vital asset for bikers, walkers and runners; and Whereas, a goal of the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board is to protect and preserve environmental resources for the City of Minneapolis and the regional area. Therefore Be it resolved that the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board support Senator Julie Sabo in her efforts to protect Camp Coldwater Springs and the Minnehaha Creek Watershed area; Be it Further Resolved that the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board opposes legislation that will negatively impact the cultural, historical and environmental resources at Camp Coldwater Springs.
