I attended a River Forum where the Guthrie and one of the architects made a presentation about the building plans. Seeing the view corridor and internal spaces in greater detail was interesting. The parking ramp and shop space is a huge dark box that dwarfs the highly designed space that we are discussing on this list. From Washington Ave. unless there is development that hides the ramp it will be the main look of the Guthrie for most city dwellers. From what was said at the meeting, the look of the ramp is to be determined by what the city spends on the facility. The stacking of the theaters and interior functions that came about in the design process is different from the original footprint. This means that there is a very large area down river, to the East. The Guthrie will own this land and could sell it for a compatible use or use it for expansion at a later date. What is the best use of this land? Do we want to look out at a field of native flowers as we look down steam from the "bridge"? The ramp next to the building has no public connection to the theater other than walking across the street. The seats on the sides of the proscenium theater face a blank wall rather than the proscenium opening. There was no effort to encourage or accommodate bicycles. The architect indicated that the bridge, plaza and other interior spaces would be open to the non theater going public. I would like to know how that would work during performances.
