Our illustrious list manager pointed out that Eden Prairie may have negotiated a deal with the FAA � a big victory for the folks in Eden Prairie -- that will essentially ban louder planes from using Flying Cloud Airport. I doubt that�s going to have a significant impact on the amount of noise that South Minneapolis hears from older planes � there�s just not enough volume out there.
Here�s something that might, though � and it�s a really interesting story not (yet) covered by the Star Tribune: Yesterday, the Met Council�s Transportation committee met, for what looked like a basic rubber stamp review and approval of the Metropolitan Airports Commission capital improvement program, and the release of about $103 million dollars to the MAC. But former State Senator and current district 5 representative Phil Riveness threw the MAC a curve ball. Instead of releasing the money to the MAC, Riveness proposed that the money be released ONLY if MAC honored the 1996 promise made by the MAC and the Legislature to provide noise mitigation out to the 60 DNL noise contour. Riveness pointed out that as a former legislator who voted to keep the airport in its current location, he felt betrayed by the current actions of the MAC in backtracking from their commitment to mitigating its effects on the citizens in surrounding communities. His proposal passed the Transportation Committee on a 6 � 1 vote, and will be heard by the full Met Council at their meeting this Wednesday, February 27th. I�m sure all the Met Council members are going to be subjected to some heavy lobbying from the MAC and Met Council Chair Ted Mondale between now and then . . .
