In celebration of Black History Month, James Forman, a civil rights activist
for more than 40 years, will address the Minneapolis City Council on
Thursday, February 28 at 11 a.m. during its regularly scheduled Committee of
the Whole in the third floor Council Chambers (City Hall, 350 S. 5th Street,

A long time activist, joined the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee
(SNCC) and served as its executive secretary from 1961 to 1966 and its

in the civil rights events of the 1960s; Forman was actively involved in the
passage of the 1964 Civil Rights Act and the 1965 Voting Rights Law.

He later served as president of the Unemployment and Poverty Action
Committee and addressed such issues as U.S. sanctions against South African
apartheid, the Intermediate Nuclear Force Treaty and the 1993 National Voter
