After reviewing EPA air quality trends data, one finds that the concentration
in the air of the "criteria pollutants" declined in the period 1980-1999
(the latest) as follows:

www.epa.gov/air/aqtrnd99/brochure/brochure.pdf

  o airborne lead down 94%
  o PM-10 (dust) down 18% 1990-1999, 75% 1970-1999
o volatile organic compounds down 42%
  o sulfur dioxide down 50%
  o carbon monoxide down 57%
  o ozone down 20%
  o nitrogen dixide down 25%
o ambient benzene urban concentration down 39% 1993-1998

Remember that the early 1970s were generally the years with the highest
levels of these pollutants.

Visibility has remained the same or greatly improved west of the Mississippi
since 1970.

Take a look at the maps online there that show what areas are not attaining
the EPA pollution levels. Most of the country does reach the desired levels.
If the rate of childhood leukemia has increased in the last 20 years, it
isn't due to increasing levels of pollution.
