Having spent a fair bit of time around the state capitol in the past
couple months, I can tell you there isn't a lot of interest right now in
urban issues.
The special needs of city schools, affordable housing, urban
environmental issues (i.e.. mass transit, airport) are very very low on the
agenda.
This is important to note as we go into our precinct caucuses, for all
parties. The city of Minneapolis has some of the highest vote turnout in
the state...and delivers more Democratic votes than anywhere....If we start
acting together we could, and should, have far more clout.
So to those who are going to the caucuses without a clear choice in
mind, I suggest you sub caucus something like: Uncommitted, urban issues.
If enough of us go to the convention pushing these issues, the
candidates for statewide office will need to address them...
If you already have a candidate, keep pushing him/her toward these
issues.
And if you have friends in St. Paul, encourage them to join us, too.
It's a big state with lots of needs but the needs of the state's
biggest city....and the part of the state that generates the most tax
revenue....should be much higher on the statewide agenda.
