I know that Unbank charges 3% + a .75 cent service fee
for government or computerized payroll checks. That is
not a terribly high amount (depending on the size of
the check, of course).
I know because I use the service quite a bit, even
though I have an account at Wells Fargo. The reason is
quite simple. I pay rent on a more or less weekly
basis (renting from a friend) and like to pay the same
day or day after I get paid. However, I work in west
Bloomington and cannot pick up my check until after
4pm. Were I to deposit the check in my account that
night, I would not be able to withdraw the funds for
TWO DAYS, since deposits after 3 are considered next
day deposits. I hate carrying around that much cash,
but find it hard to come up with a better solution.
