Like many at the caucuses, folks hovering at the literature table in
10-4 were truly saddened by the news. I wish Myron well, and I am
certain he will have much to offer Minnesota's civic life for years
to come.
The conventional wisdom is that potential candidates will not emerge
until after the courts redraw the lines on March 19. It is probably
safe to assume that our current state house members will be
interested in the Senate seat if they still live in a future open
seat. Who knows what will happen?
It is exciting to live in a place where the political landscape is
dynamic and evolving. I believe that a new generation of civic ideas
and visions for our community and state are being born right now. In
large part they are being formed through the changes we are
experiencing in Minneapolis and the broader world around us.
Let me be a bit unconventional. This is an invitation to join me as
I seriously explore running for the Minnesota legislature.
In the near future we'll strike up an open conversation on a special
e-mail list about the open seat(s). I'd like your help and advice.
Tell me what issues matter to you and what kind of representation you
expect. For those who live in the (future) district, this is chance
to be involved in a meaningful and innovative campaign from the start
should I, with your help, decide to become a candidate.

P.S. The basics. I am a 32 year-old, fourth generation Minnesotan.
My grandparents home was replaced by the fire station behind the
convention center and my father graduated from Central High. While I
was born in the district, I can't argue that my seven weeks as an
early district resident were politically formative for me. On my
return, I have lived in the district continuously for over ten years.
If I run, I will seek and abide by the DFL endorsement. While my
recent civic work has been strictly non-partisan (and will remain
so), I worked for the DFL Party during the 1990 election and served
on the DFL state executive committee as the chair of the statewide
young DFL in 1991-92. In 1991, I worked in the State Senate for then
Senator Steve Morse before attending the Humphrey Institute. Visit
my web site <http://www.stevenclift.com> for my more recent
activities. Thanks.
