[TB] At our Loring Park neighborhood meeting last night, someone told the group that he had computed the impact of the proposed downtown tax on someone who lives or works in downtown Minneapolis. If the person buys 5 coffees a week at $2 each, has 1 $20 meal per week plus 4 drinks at $4 each the proposed stadium takes would cost him or her $60 per year. That is on top of the $291 per year that the same person is paying for the current downtown taxes to finance the Convention Center. A proposed total of over $350 per year for specific purposes which don't have specific benefits limited to those living or working downtown. The convention center tax is a 3% downtown restaurant tax, plus an additional 3% downtown liquor tax, plus an additional 3% entertainment tax on your food and beverages if the bar or restaurant has an entertainment license. This is on top of the 6.5 percent state sales tax plus .5% city wide sales tax or a potential total 16 percent currently. The proposed stadium 2% stadium tax would result in a total tax in a restaurant which hosts entertainment of 18 percent on your meal. Interestingly, if you wait until you get inside the dome to buy your meal the downtown taxes do not apply, however if you eat across the street at Hubert's they do. Totally unrelated. Does anyone know where I can get census data down to the precinct level for the City of Minneapolis. Please email me privately if you do. Thanks.
