The issue is very pertinent to many of us in the city and on this list. A couple of months ago, City Pages did an article on a murder that occured on 26th and 13th Av. in the Phillips neighborhood. While I won't talk about the gruesome nature of this murder, I will talk about the thread in the story that suggests that a high percentage of those described as "Level III Sex Offenders" were being released into a small radius of the Phillips neighborhood. I can't remember the percentage quoted in the story but it was very high. Just a coincidence?
What was even more disconcerting is that the house where this murder occured was not registered as a supportive, transitional, or whatever classification of housing, yet, all the renters in that house were released Level III sex offenders. I think the PNN.org website may have the story on this. Just a coincidence? This is an issue that is very hard to address. What happens to these people once they are released from jail? They most likely won't end up in Kenwood so are those of us in poorer inner city neighborhoods saddled with the burden of housing the majority of these people? How closely are they monitored by law enforcement once they leave jail? Are there reports available that show what impact "community notification" has on a predators repeat offenses? Quite frankly, they have always been in our midst, but, up until a few years ago, no one told us. And the big question is, once they tell us, what are we supposed to do about it?
