I was Action (Jet) in the Bloomington Civic Theatre production of "West Side
Story" (are you ready?) 40 years ago this summer/fall. Ours was the first
community theatre production of the show anywhere and mounted while the Mann
Theatres were still showing the film. We performed on what was then the
Lincoln High School stage, which I believe is now the Central office of the
Bloomington schools.
The Newspaper Guild was strike the Tribune at the time, so the daily paper
was published called the Minneapolis Herald, which, starved for subjects,
ran almost three pages of huge photos of the great ensemble work, especially
for an "amateur" staging.
It's a very popular show for young people to do because it's all about young
people serving themes of racism and the self-destruction inherent in hate.
Break a leg, South High kids.
