Ken Avidor compared the Critical Mass riders to the
Falun Gong, and the MPD to the People's Armed Police
of Communist China. This makes about as much sense as
insisting that the ants infesting your house are
really a herd of rhinoceros...
The riders of Critical Mass do not present a
challenge, passive or otherwise, to the political
system of our city, much less our country. To draw
an analogy to the Falun Gong on this basis is hyperbole
and demagoguery. The MPD have not tortured or shot any
riders in the back of the head (as in commonly done in
the PRC to political prisoners) much less sent the
bill for the rounds used to the relatives of the
deceased.
If excessive force was used on the riders,
which certainly seems to be the case, those responsible
should be punished. Comparing them to the secret police
of a totalitarian regime, however, alienates many people
who might otherwise have been interested in making common cause with you, myself among
them. I have nothing
against Critical Mass, but to compare them to the Falun
Gong demeans the struggle of those brave Chinese and
makes you look silly, Ken.
