Recently I interned at the capital with a House Representative. Fortunately
and interestingly enough for me I was able to be there when the redistricting
maps were first announced to the House. The reactions and conversations that
were buzzing around me was certainly interesting and something that I never
had experienced before. I for one was a bit confused to the whole situation
but the rep. who I was intering with whisked me through the offices of her
DFL coworkers to discuss the changes that have arised. Now the representive
that I was working with, for one, was satisfied, and in some ways very happy
with the redistricting changes that had occurred. While other reps. were on
those same lines, there were some who were crying, cursing, and all outs
completely upset with the system and how they were "screwed" over by the
courts. Saying all of this however, I observed that the overall consenseus
of the maps that it was going to be all right. We come to this conclusion
because this is a new step for the experience that they all have to committ
too. This new adventure of meeting new people and being put out into a new
environment will be enriching to learn how to adapt to the intersts of
another community, as well. I believe that this opportunity should be
embraced by all members of the legislature as a gift, and not as a burden.
