I support Andy Driscoll's assertion that clean air is a Mpls Issues list. We have been down this road before on this list, and I and others have repeatedly pointed out that clean air is a local issue. If pollution is generated in Mpls, why is it not a Mpls issue?
The Xcel (NSP) RIverside coal burning plant is located on the Mississippi River within a residential community in NE Mpls and most directly affects the river and people all over N and NE. It also contributes to lung and pulmonary disease for anyone living in Minneapolis. Additionally, we have the HERC garbage burner, also located in north Mpls, and several HUNDRED sources of additional air pollution in the upper Mississippi RIver corridor of Minneapolis. If you have read recent reports, you will know that small particulates (soot), which are produced by coal burning plants, are an insidious health risk because these particles migrate from the lungs into the blood. If you breathe, you are affected. While it is true that clean air is not regulated at the local level alone, it is ludicrous to suggest that coal burning plants do not affect Mpls residents and clean air is not a topic for this list. Surely it is as appropriate as airport noise, considering that the planes do not fly over the Mpls air space exclusively.
