In response to the post below: If the purpose of a bike license is to help out if it's stolen, what recourse does a citizen have when the Minneapolis Police Department takes a bicycle because it doesn't have a license? Isn't this an example of a law that is voluntary in nature? It seems to me that if my unlicensed bike were stolen then I'm out of luck trying to get it back. That seems fair, because if I want the police to help me get my stolen bike back then I should have it licensed. But to take bikes from people because the bike is not licensed does not seem fair to me.
In response to recent posts on about Critical Mass: Granted there are quite a few versions available regarding Friday's Critical Mass ride, but a clear fact is that the mass wasn't intially stopped because some riders ran a red light. The mass was a target of the MPD and the MPD actions were 100% pre-meditated. Or perhaps we can get the 911 call and MPD radio transmission that says, "I just saw a bicyclist run a red light", and the precinct call to get as many police as possible to stop this dangerous lawlessness. Here's what we (www.MinnesotaCriticalMass.org) want to know: Why was this action taken by the MPD? How much did it cost the taxpayers for the MPD to take this action? And Don Greeley, can you please identify a few bike shops that sell licenses? I called a few and they say they have never sold them and they understand that one has to purchase them from the City of Minneapolis. ~!~Stephen Eisenmenger Mpls, Ward 10 >Actually there is a law requiring licensing of bicycles. You can get a license for your bike at many bike shops and at the DMV where you buy tabs for a car. The cost is $10 for three years. When the police find an unlicensed bicycle, they can impound it. The purpose of the licensing is to allow an owner to recover their bike if stolen. The property room will run the license number and you will be able to get your bike back.
