Maybe it's time to make the Critical Mass ride a legal, city-sponsored event, to build awareness of bike safety and support for alternative transportation. I think a lot of people (myself included) would enjoy coming out once a month for the ride, who right now are reluctant to risk injury or having their bikes damaged or confiscated by the police.
