When I ran for the state legislature in 1996, I made the round of the
endorsing meetings, including the DFL Feminist Caucus. Nearly the entire
meeting was devoted to the fact that I lacked the union "bug" on my
literature. I explained that I was self-employed and wrote all my own
material and made my own copies on my own machines. Not pure enough.

Just for the record, I had a pretty good record on women's issues at the U
of MN where I had been employed for a number of years. I was a member of the
Faculty Advisory Committee for Women (FACW), the lead organization that
helped women filing claims under the Rajender Consent Decree (a landmark
decision regarding wage discrimination at da U). FACW even gave me an award
for my activities.

Okay, so the DFL Feminist Caucus didn't like my explanation on the union
bug, and eventually endorsed someone else. Fine. But not to even acknowledge
or ask about my record on feminist issues seemed bizarre. Sounds like not
much has changed.
