I'm pleased to let everyone know that in early June, I'll become the editor
of Southwest Journal. I'll keep editing Skyway News as well. It's a big
challenge, but I'm thrilled with the chance to cover news in my SW backyard
and keep the Downtown beat I've really come to relish.

I plan to keep Southwest reporters covering their SW neighborhoods and
Skyway reporters (of which there will soon be more than one!) focused on
Downtown. However, there are many city issues that stretch beyond the
respective papers' boundaries. By having all the reporters under one editor,
I can do a better job of coordination, deploying reporters with less
duplication and tailoring broad issue stories to our two coverage areas.

Hopefully, the - dare I say it? - synergy will free up reporters to do more
and/or better pieces to serve the residents of this city.

In any change, someone leaves, and I want to tip my digital cap to Jayne
Solinger, who is about as classy as any journalist I've had the pleasure to
meet. Like most of us, Jayne came here because she loves public-service and
community journalism. She loved it so much she made the leap from TV to
print, but has decided to leap back. Quitting in the summertime to recharge
one's batteries also has a certain allure. Jayne's decision set the other
balls in motion.

Jayne will be staying through early June as we make the transition. My first
solo issue will be June 24.

The Journal has a hard-won and well-deserved reputation for integrity,
fairness and detailed reporting, built through owners Janis Hall and Terry
Gahan, editors Mark Anderson, Linda Picone, and Jayne, and countless
excellent reporters. I plan no major changes coming in, beyond combining our
staffs to produce the best coverage.

I'm open to any feedback readers have about Southwest Journal, or Skyway
News for that matter. Since I'll continue Southwest's tradition of
editorials, you might read a few less of my opinions here. But I'll keep on
managing Mpls-Issues; the nice thing about my new job is that I can extend
my own passion for community involvement and public information a little
further.
