 May 12th : Today,“Mother’s Day” , was a big day on
the Ave. Lots of dealers out. Lots of prostitutes. The bass in Calhoun are
amazing if you find the right spot. It
is humorous to us that a “City Pages” reporter
actually paid twenty bucks to be shown a major
 crack/’ho house.What makes the
chain of lakes so interesting is that they seem to go through so many
changes. And even more humorous that the
dealer said someone might kill him if he told anyone,
because the whole town, including the police, knows
this house. We see long lines cue up every morning to
do a deal. It, along with several others, is
notorious on the east side of Phillips. Several dealers ask us what we are
doing. We remind them of the shooting,(they all
know). We point out that this is a kid area, at least
75 kids catch the bus on 25th or very nearby every
day. What might be a weedy area one year is barren the next. We ask them if
they have kids and if they want
them catching the bus standing in front of dealers,
whores, pimps, & johns, on the same corner. We tell
them that we do not hate them, but they must get the
dealing out of here and away from all these kids and
that we will do whatever it takes to accomplish this.My favorite quote,
courtesy of Tim Lestmiester: "Half the fish have never
even seen a lure before."

We ask them to respect this and honor our commitment
to the kids here, perhaps their own. Some listen hard
and agree. Many are already totally high.
We get going, take out our cell phones and, leaving
some to pour the coffee, we move down the Avenue.
Suddenly 20 or more dealers and prostitutes form a
large and menacing group on 28th and Bloom. They all
begin to converge on us.If you were to grab a topographical map of the lake
bottom, it's also very
apparent that Calhoun has simply unbelievable structure. Today we have no
police
squad to protect us as we have in the past few days.
They look angry. We call 911 and describe our
situation. The dispatcher says he will send someone to
 get us out of here.
     At least
that's what pro angler Karen Savik observed in a story I wrote a couple of
years ago:
We tell him we are not leaving.
 There are children ...
