Matthea and others,

I will be sad to lose your support. I would think that you would support me on the basis of my ideas, and not because I chose to have a political philosophy on education that believes education is not the place to battle out partisan politics.

The Republican Party has done much to politicize education and use it as a way to divide and conquer individuals who believe that non-elitist education is one of the foundations for mutual understanding and healing. I understand that education is political, but it is political now in a way that it hasn't been since the 1960s. I have been an ardent DFL supporter, and I will continue to be so.

There is a reason that political party affiliations are not listed on the ballot for School Board elections. I understand that reason, and I happen to be in agreement. I believe the endorsing process is valid and has a real place in all other elected positions. I would never consider running for any other office without the endorsement of the DFL.

Again, I understand that I will lose the support of some by this decision. But, a portion of your email reflects one of the reasons that I am running without seeking the DFL endorsement: the Board of Education should not be about party politics, it should be about electing people who have an impact oriented agenda for achievement for the young people of Minneapolis.

My roots are as a community organizer and activist. Those are the communities with which I most identify, and in those communities we understand that often times to effect real change, you have to scrap business as usual.

Again, I am sad for the loss of your support Matthea. I hope that the DFL endorses candidates that have a clear vision and agenda for the Minneapolis Public Schools. And I will look forward to working with some of those folks on the Board of Education. I urge you to reconsider your decision to not support my candidacy.
Best,
Brandon Lacy Campos

Subject: Re: Not Seeking DFL Endorsement

I am concerned that you are not seeking the DFL endorsement.  The reason I feel so strongly about the endorsement process is that in my opinion is a large of of the DFL's grassroots organizing effort.  Admittedly, we, the DFL, have done poorly to get enough folks out to participate, but not seeking the endorsement always seems to me that folks are choosing to run in the Primary thus supporting the principles that support big money politics.

I would hope you would rethink this, but I will respect you and your decisions, but I really can only support DFL endorsed candidates.

After long thought and interactions and conversations with many folks in the
community, I have decided to not seek the DFL endorsement for School Board.

I believe that while education has become highly politicized, partisan
politics should not be played out with our students. I am committed to
preserving and bettering public education. And, I am willing to work with
Greens, Republicans, Libertarians, DFLers,Monkeys, Goats, and Lizards to
serve our students and to build excellent schools in Minneapolis.

I have not changed my committment to the DFL or to the DFL platform, but I
also recognize that education is at a crisis point in our community, and it
will take broad thinkers and action-takers to make real change in the
schools.

I look forward to your support in September, and I hope you are all well.
